All of them have no memory of how they got there. This is where our main characters are introduced: A brother and sister, then a total stranger wakes up on wooden platforms floating in an underground lake. The Earth is seen at the "beginning realm" and important for a spirit's character-building, as that will decide which "reincarnation path" it will go down.
They become more powerful and wise with each reincarnation, everyone eventually becoming god-like with enough time. Instead of believing there are endless realms spirits ascend to with each death. The locals don't believe in the traditional afterlife and Gods. It'd be set outside of Japan, instead of with an ambiguous tropical island setting. Put your own ideas in the comments if you like. But still, I think it fun to think about the possibilities. There hasn't been a main Fatal frame game since 2014, so a fifth one coming out seems unlikely.
